KAWSARI SHUNKU
For a really long time, it felt taboo to talk about where my mom came from. Any mention of the life she knew growing up was reduced to jokes or stereotypes prevalent in popular media. It became easier for the both of us to simply avoid the topic altogether, at work, at school, even at church. But at home, I listened. Visualizing the world she had painted with her words in my mind, wondering if experiences like the ones she had weren't some work of fiction.
This project is a love letter to my mom and to my family, for allowing me the privilege to meet a part of myself I had no idea existed. For allowing me the privilege to form my own collection of memories, moments and feelings to share loudly and unashamedly.
